Get-Pumped-Up Songlist

We asked some local riders which songs they listen to on the way to the beach to get pumped up or out on the water while they are cruisin'. We also asked for feedback on waterproof mp3 players. Here's what they had to say:

Waterproof Mp3 players

Matt McCarty: “I’ve had several iPod nanos with the Otterbox waterproof case and been very happy with it. It ends up being the size of an average cell phone which might be a tad bulky for some, but still fit in boardshorts pockets easily. I’ve had several of the Otterbox cases pop open and water ruined the ipod but every time Otterbox replaced my ipod and case for free! It probably happened once a year. Normally, I wouldn’t have kept using this system but since they always replaced it I was happy. I personally liked having the nano instead of the shuffle since the nano still has a screen. The shuffle seemed like it would be fine if you are only using it for kiteboarding or jogging, etc, but I like to have one ipod I can use for everything. Headphones make a huge difference! DON’T get the H2O Audio H3 (or similar) headphones!!! They sound really crappy and are VERY uncomfortable!!! Spend the extra $10 and get the H2O Surge (or similar) headphones. They sound really good and block outside noise. You’d be surprised how loud wind and water splashing can be when you’re trying to listen to music. I haven’t tried it yet and don’t know how generous their warranty is, but the new Interval Waterproof Headphone system by H20 Audio looks super cool. It’s about the same price as getting an Otterbox, though, and you can’t control a Nano without opening the case. On a final note, be sure to secure your ipod multiple ways!! I lost 2 ipods at Leeside even though it was inside my velcro boardshorts pocket AND tied to the string inside the pocket that holds the wax comb/bottle opener. Oh and check out the Free Groovement Podcasts. A lot of them have interviews in the middle which is annoying, but three of my favorites that don't have interviews are "DK (Wide Awake)," "DJ Risco vs Filthy Few," and "Shaolin Monkey (Rocksteady)."

Mitch Roberts: “I’ve had great experiences with H20 Audio’s customer service. Every time I’ve called, they have gone above and beyond to answer all of my questions. I have an older waterproof case for an iPod and it still works great. I’m also looking at getting the Surge headphones for Christmas! (hint, hint). Now that I have my Mp3 player, I don’t like sailing without it unless it’s super nukin.”

Travis Glover: I’ve got the iPod shuffle waterproofed by Swim Man. True, you have no control over what song plays next, but how cool to have such a tiny player without a bulky case. There are also no worries about the case popping open while riding. Of course, I have to be careful about how I secure it. I have the basic waterproof headphones from Swim Man which work really well and sound great, but are designed to be attached to swim goggles. I just bought some sunglasses to use only with the Swim Man headphones so I don't have to bother with reattaching them every session."
