Akers of Strawberries
On more than one occasion, our friends Neil and Hannah have raved on about the best strawberry shortcake they’ve ever eaten.
They seemed a little ashamed to admit that they polished off three shortcakes between the two of them. Well, they successfully and firmly planted the idea that I MUST try one of these said shortcakes in my head. I was planning on picking strawberries to freeze for a summer of healthy banana-strawberry smoothies anyway, so I had a justification to be indulgent and a good reason to make the hour drive to Akers of Strawberries in Baker, FL.
Because I ended up being pressed for time, I didn’t pick my own strawberries as I had originally planned but bought a flat for $18. While I waited for the strawberries to be delivered from the field, I visited the small air conditioned room off of their main open-air building to see if the shortcake would live up to my expectations. There was a sweet little lady pulling fresh shortcake out of the oven and a young woman serving up the shortcake with frozen strawberry yogurt, fresh strawberries from the field, and whipped cream.
It was everything that Hannah and Neil promised it would be. It’s a good thing that I had a very light lunch that day because they were right, you can’t eat just one! Next time you are headed anywhere near Baker during strawberry season, enjoy a scenic side excursion and get yourself some of the best strawberry shortcake around. You won’t be disappointed.
