The Last Shiitake

If you have been following the blog since its inception, you may remember my excitement at the arrival of our shiitake mushroom log.
If not, you can read about it HERE and HERE. At first I kept up with the regular soakings and shockings of the log, but after awhile the excitement waned. It was a lot of work for 1-2 mushrooms every month. Now to be fair our climate is not ideal for the log. It prefers 62-78 degrees F and goes dormant below 40 and above 80 degrees F. When I bought it, I guess I was in a state of disillusionment. I must have thought that my log would be different and enjoy our hot Florida summer and freezing winter. And, we aren’t people who leave the air conditioning and heat running to maintain an ideal temperature inside our home. After neglecting the log for some time, I decided to set it free in the wilderness of our backyard. I came to the conclusion that I am just not that into having a pet log. Not long after its release from the domestic life, the log sprouted its first mushroom in months. Of course as soon as I decided to go harvest it for a stir fry, the mushroom had vanished. That’s okay because I’m over it…..
