Blue July
When I think of July, I think blue.
We have the annual Blue Angels Air Show, blueberry season, and usually we have the light-wind blues. July is traditionally one of our slowest months for kiteboarding. Last year I remember two good 15-20mph days. However, this year has been awesome! And today, it looks like we may have an epic session in the making with the approach of Tropical Storm Bonnie.
In between sessions this month, we have been scoring lots of fresh, local produce. Something we have been striving to do is keep ourselves healthy by eating lots of fresh, seasonal, and local food. We’re lucky to have a farmer’s market within walking distance once a week and also belong to a CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) that delivers fresh eggs, meat, and produce to our door. And, we have been getting the best hookups this summer from our friends Neil and Hannah!
Hannah recently invited me to go blueberry picking at her aunt’s house. I went with a plan: quality over quantity. Two years ago, I went to a “you pick farm” with the wrong plan: quantity over quality. I spent two years trying to use up less-than-average berries in smoothies, pancakes, and muffins. This time around, my freezer is packed with antioxidants that taste good too! If blueberries aren’t a part of your diet, please add them to it now! They are at the top of the list of the world’s super foods that will have you riding strong all year long and keep you from getting the blues.
